UK Approves Oral Wegovy for Weight Loss: Eligibility, Dosing and Switching
Anyone who has put off weight loss treatment because of needles now has another option. On 11 June 2026, the UK medicines regulator (the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, or MHRA) approved oral Wegovy, a once-daily oral semaglutide tablet, for weight loss and weight management. The Wegovy pill is now licensed across the UK, and is the first GLP-1 weight loss medicine in the UK that you swallow rather than inject.
For existing semaglutide users, that opens up a switch many have been waiting for. This guide walks through who qualifies, how well the tablet works, the dosing rules, the side effects, and how a switch from the injection actually works.
What is the Wegovy pill and how does it work?
Oral Wegovy contains semaglutide, the same medicine as the Wegovy injection, in a daily tablet. After you eat, your gut releases a hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). Semaglutide copies that hormone and works on the parts of your brain that handle hunger. You feel full sooner, and you stay full for longer. Food cravings tend to quieten down as well. The one catch with the tablet is how it is absorbed. Oral semaglutide only gets into your system properly on an empty stomach. So, how you take it matters more than with the injection.
Who can take the Wegovy pill?
The eligibility rules mirror the Wegovy injection. Adults with obesity qualify, meaning a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above. Adults who are overweight can also qualify, at a BMI between 27 and 30, if they have a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure. The Wegovy tablet sits alongside healthier eating and more activity, not in place of them. If you already take a prescribed GLP-1 medicine for weight loss, you will most likely meet these rules already. Meeting the BMI threshold is not the whole picture, though. Whether the tablet is the right choice for you depends on your history and how you have got on with treatment so far.
How much weight can you lose on the Wegovy pill?
Most people lose a meaningful amount of weight. In the OASIS 4 trial, the people taking oral semaglutide lost around 13.6% of their body weight over about 15 months. For someone weighing 100kg, that is roughly 13 to 14kg. The trial authors placed oral semaglutide in the same bracket as the 2.4mg Wegovy injection.
Your own weight loss will not match the average exactly. Your results also rest on your starting weight, your dose, how well you tolerate the medicine, and the eating and activity changes you make alongside it.
How do you take the Wegovy pill?
Timing is everything with oral Wegovy. You take it once a day, first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach. You must swallow the tablet whole with a small sip of water, after at least 8 hours without food. Then wait a full 30 minutes before you eat, drink, or take anything else. Eat or drink sooner, and your body absorbs much less of the dose.
What is the Wegovy pill dosage schedule?
The dose climbs upward in clear stages. You start at 1.5mg once daily, then step up through 4mg, 9mg and 25mg, the maintenance strength. Each step needs at least a month at the dose before it. You do not need to rush the next step before you feel settled, or if you are seeing results.
What are the side effects of the Wegovy pill?
The side effects are mostly digestive ones. Nausea, diarrhoea, constipation and vomiting are the most common. Nausea is the one people notice most, and it tends to peak around dose increases. For most people, it eases within the first few weeks as the body adjusts. In the OASIS 4 clinical trial, side effect patterns looked much like the injection, so if you have used a GLP-1 before, they will not come as a surprise.

How should you store the Wegovy pill?
The tablets are easy to look after. Keep them at room temperature and somewhere dry. Leave each one in its original packaging until you take it, because moisture can weaken how well the tablet works.
How much does the Wegovy pill cost in the UK?
A UK price has not been set yet. We will share full pricing at Medy as soon as it is confirmed. Cost will track your dose, the same way it does with the injection.
Is the Wegovy pill available on the NHS?
The Wegovy pill is not on the NHS, at least for now. Oral Wegovy is approved, but the NHS does not fund it yet. Before that can happen, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has to review whether it represents good value for NHS funding. Until then, the route to oral Wegovy is private.
Should you switch from the Wegovy injection to the pill?
This is the big question for existing patients. The pill takes injections off the table, but it asks for a stricter daily routine in return. Which of those matters more depends on what you found hard about treatment in the first place. If needles were the sticking point, the tablet is a clear win. If you struggle with daily habits, the weekly jab may still suit you better.
The switch itself can be quite straightforward. The MHRA says people on the 2.4mg Wegovy injection once a week can move straight onto the 25mg Wegovy pill once a day. You would not start low and titrate up again.
On a lower Wegovy injection dose, or on Mounjaro (tirzepatide), no automatic crossover applies, so check with us before changing anything.

Wegovy pill vs injection: what's the difference?
The medicine inside is identical: semaglutide either way. The real difference is the daily routine. You take one tablet daily on an empty stomach, against one injection a week with no food rules at all. Weight loss and side effects land in much the same place.
Is the Wegovy pill the same as Rybelsus?
Rybelsus and oral Wegovy are both semaglutide tablets, but they are licensed for different uses. Rybelsus treats type 2 diabetes at lower strengths. Oral Wegovy is the 25mg weight-management version.
How do I switch from Mounjaro to the Wegovy pill?
This is not a switch to make on your own. Mounjaro is tirzepatide, a different medicine from semaglutide, so no set conversion dose links the two. Tell us where you are with Mounjaro now, and we will map out a sensible starting point on the tablet.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Just skip it and carry on as normal. If you miss a day, leave that dose out and take the next one as normal the following morning. Do not double up to catch up. If you are unsure, send our clinical team a quick message.
